Britain New Travel Permit: What Europeans Need to Know

From Wednesday, European visitors to Britain must buy an electronic permit before their trip. The UK government is doing this to improve border security by checking travelers before they arrive. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme requires all visitors who do not need a visa to apply online before traveling.

The permit costs £10 (12 euros), but from April 9, the price will increase to £16. Irish citizens do not need this permit. The ETA system was first introduced last year for non-European visitors, including travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Migration Minister Seema Malhotra announced last month, “Expanding ETA worldwide shows our commitment to improving security using technology and innovation.”

Britain more detail about applying criteria

Britain’s Home Office said that applying for an ETA is easy through the UK ETA app, and most people will get a quick decision and responses in minutes.
To apply, travelers must upload a photo, provide personal details, and answer questions about their background and criminal record. Once approved, the ETA is linked to their passport digitally.

An ETA allows travelers to visit the UK multiple times for up to six months within a two-year period.
Airlines, ferries, and train companies must check if travelers have an ETA before they let them board.
Budget airline easyJet declares on Tuesday that the new permission rule would not reduce demand for travel from Europe to the UK.

In 2023, the UK received 22.5 million visitors from the European Union, an increase from 19 million in 2022, according to official data.
The EU plans to introduce its new border security system for United Kingdom travelers in October. Britain left the EU in 2020.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace passport stamping at EU borders. Instead, it will create digital records that connect a travel document to a person’s identity using biometrics.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will come before a more advanced system called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). ETIAS will also require travelers from outside the Schengen area to pay a fee before visiting.
Right now, British travelers pay about £17 for a similar permit to enter the U.S.
