Mozambique President Daniel Chapo met main opposition leader Venancio Mondlane to discuss ways to reduce tensions. The meeting came after months of violent clashes between protesters and security forces, the president’s office said on Sunday.
Mozambique has been facing political trouble since the disputed general election in October.
International observers said the election had many problems. After the vote, protests and roadblocks lasted for more than two months. A local civil society group reported that over 360 people lost their lives during this time.
Chapo and Mondlane met in the capital, Maputo, to talk about ways to solve the country’s problems, the president’s office said. The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to bring stability and support peace in the country
He said he would soon share more details about the meeting and explain the next steps.
Mondlane, who is popular among young people, did not join the meeting. Instead, he led hundreds of his supporters in a march in Maputo.
About 14 people were injured during violent clashes with the police.
At least two people died last week when police fired at a crowd during another protest organized by Mondlane.
The president’s office said Sunday’s meeting showed a wish to build connections and have open, helpful talks. They also shared a photo of Chapo and Mondlane shaking hands.
Chapo’s move came almost two weeks after Mondlane said he was questioned for 10 hours by prosecutors and placed under court supervision.
Official results from last year’s election showed Mondlane in second place, while Chapo, from the Frelimo party, won. Frelimo has ruled Mozambique since it became independent from Portugal in 1975.
Chapo received 65 percent of the votes, while Mondlane got 24 percent.

Crime in Austin: A Growing Concern?
In August 2024, people living in the Montopolis neighborhood told KVUE-TV that crime was increasing, and they were worried about their safety.
“It gives me chills to hear eight, nine, or ten gunshots—just bam, bam, bam. Where are those bullets going?” one resident said. “I don’t want to get shot while sleeping in my bed.”

On Monday afternoon, Jones said in a broadcast that Jamie White, his “best” reporter, was “brutally murdered” late Sunday night near his home in Austin.

He blamed Austin’s Democratic district attorney and other Democrats for not controlling crime. Jones said they were “helping” criminals and even called them “demons.”
City police have not confirmed Jamie White’s death.Moreover they only said that they got an emergency call at 11:57 p.m. on Sunday and found a man with serious injuries. He later died at a nearby hospital.
Officials did not respond to questions from The Independent. So far, only InfoWars has reported White’s identity, but the website has a history of making false claims.

In his broadcast, Alex Jones blamed local Democratic leaders, including Austin District Attorney José Garza, for reducing police funding and not keeping dangerous criminals in jail.

Jones thanked the police for responding quickly and said InfoWars staff were sent home to grieve. He did not guess who might have killed White or why.
However, he said, “I blame this completely on these district attorneys, the Soros crime group, and the Democratic Party.”
Austin District Attorney José Garza was elected in 2020 with support from a political group funded by billionaire George Soros. Soros donates to progressive causes but is also often the target of conspiracy theories.
Since his election, Garza has been criticized by InfoWars and billionaireElon Musk, who reportedly tried to remove him from office but failed.
