Former President Donald Trump has confirmed that the US is engaged in direct nuclear talks with Iran, potentially signaling a new phase in the US and Iran nuclear deal negotiations.
Trump told reporters, “The US is now in direct communication with Iran regarding its nuclear program.” He didn’t share many details, but it sounds like serious discussions may be happening behind the scenes.
The US and Iran nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was first signed in 2015 during President Barack Obama’s time in office. The goal of the deal was to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. But in 2018, Trump pulled the US out of the agreement, which led to more tension and caused Iran to ramp up its nuclear program.
Donald Trump said that the US and Iran will hold direct talks about a possible nuclear deal on Saturday.
Iran’s foreign minister also confirmed the meeting but said the talks would be indirect. He added that the talks could be both an opportunity and a test for both countries.
On Monday, Trump said the discussions between the US and Iran would be at a very high level. He also warned that if no deal is made, it would be a very bad day for Iran.
Just last month, Trump had even talked about possible military action against Iran after Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rejected Trump’s offer for direct talks.
Trump talked about the upcoming talks after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Netanyahu has also said in the past that Israel might take action to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
While speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said: “We have a very important meeting with Iran on Saturday, and we’re talking to them directly… Maybe we can make a deal, and that would be great.”
US and Iran Nuclear Deal: Direct Talks Raise Hopes for New Agreement
Later, Trump warned that Iran would be in serious danger if the talks didn’t go well. He declared that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks fail then it will be a very bad day for Iran.
Trump didn’t give more details about the meeting—like how far the talks have gone or which officials are involved.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister confirmed that the US and Iran will meet in Oman on 12 April. This is confirmed for US and Iran nuclear deal.
In March, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s leader through a messenger from the United Arab Emirates, saying he was open to negotiations.
Iran rejected the offer at the time, but its leaders said they were still open to talking through a third party.
Stopping Iran from building nuclear weapons has been an important goal for the US and its allies for many years.
In 2015, then-President Barack Obama made a deal with Iran. Under that US and Iran nuclear deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities and let international inspectors check its nuclear sites to make sure they were only being used for peaceful purposes not for making weapons.
In exchange, sanctions on Iran would be eased, helping its economy, which has been badly hurt by those restrictions.
The original nuclear deal was also signed by China, France, Germany, Russia, and the UK.
But in 2018, Trump pulled the US out of the deal on his own. He had criticized the agreement strongly during his first campaign for president.
Since then, Iran has broken many parts of the US and Iran Nuclear deal. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that Iran has built up large amounts of enriched uranium, which can be used to make nuclear weapons.
In recent months, Trump has often talked about wanting to make a new deal with Iran, but at the same time, he has also threatened military action if a deal can’t be made.
Israel sees stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons as very important for its security. Reports say Israel has even considered attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities in recent months.
Last year, Israel said it bombed an Iranian nuclear site in response to a missile attack from Iran.
While speaking at the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said: “The US and Israel both agree that Iran should never get nuclear weapons. If this can be solved peacefully, like it was in Libya, that would be a good solution.”
